Best Start Grant - £250 School Age Payment

08 September 2020

Have you a child starting school? You could be due £250.

The Scottish Government has increased the level of financial support available to low income families with children with the launch of its Best Start Grant School Age Payment.

The £250 School Age Payment is made around the time a child normally starts Primary 1 to help with the costs of a child starting school. You can use it for anything from school bags, shoes, a warm coat, after school clubs, books or days out– it is not a loan so does not have to be paid back.

It is open to people who receive certain benefits or tax credits and are a parent/carer of a child born between 1 March 2015 - 29 February 2016.

How do you apply?

• Social Security Scotland are taking applications online at mygov.scot/beststart or you can speak to one of their Client Advisers by calling 0800 182 2222 between 9am and 3pm Monday-Friday. Apply between 1 June 2020 - 28 February 2021

You can get Best Start Grant and Best Start Foods:

  • if your child is the right age for a payment (born between 1 March 2015 - 29 Feb 2016)
  • whether you're in work or not, as long as you're on certain payments or benefits
  • as long as you're the parent of a child, or the main person looking after the child

You only need to fill in the Best Start Grant and Best Start Foods form once to apply for all the payments you can get now.

If you can get one payment now and another in the future, you'll need to fill in a new form each time you apply.
